Cambridge English CELTA
Are you a recent graduate? Are you looking for a career change?
Are you already teaching English and want a formal qualification or better training?
Then the Cambridge English CELTA is for you.
CELTA
International House Buenos Aires is one of the most popular and well-established CELTA course providers in South America. We have been providing both full and part-time CELTA courses throughout the year for over a decade and are the first and only centre to run CELTA courses in Argentina.
What most sets us apart from other CELTA course providers in both South America and beyond is our vastly experienced team of in-house tutors, who ensure that every course is tailored to the needs of the individual candidates on each course, whether it is Face2Face or Online, full-time or part-time.
We also provide candidates on all of our courses, whether full-time or part-time, face2face or online, with a unique self-study / reference learning platform, focusing on lesson planning and language awareness, to support you before, during and after your CELTA course, at no additional cost.
The CELTA course provides speakers of English with initial training in teaching English as a foreign or second language (TEFL, EFL, TESOL and ELT) and leads to the internationally recognized qualification Cambridge English Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). It is an introductory course for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience or for candidates with some experience (or often plenty!) who are looking for further professional development and an international qualification. The courses are validated and the syllabus and assessment criteria set by Cambridge English.
The full-time Face2Face CELTA courses take place over 5 weeks, Monday to Friday, 9.00-15.30 at our school in Belgrano, Ciudad de Buenos Aires. The full-time Online CELTA courses also take place over 5 weeks, Monday to Friday, 9.00 – 15.30 but through Zoom. The part-time course lasts 20 weeks and the live classes are on Friday evenings from 17.00 – 21.00 on Zoom. All times are Buenos Aires times (UTC-3).
The minimum number of contact hours is 120, but you should calculate at least another 120 hours outside of the core timetable for background reading, lesson planning and assignment writing. On the Face2Face full-time courses, there are 120 live classroom hours and on the Online full-time courses 125 live hours. On the part-time online course there are 77 live hours on 22 Friday evenings, and the rest of the input is through online tasks and forums across the 22 weeks of the course.
During the course, candidates develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners.
The course is designed around a preparation, teaching and feedback cycle, and includes:
- 6 hours of teaching practice across 8 lessons
- 6 hours of observation of experienced teachers in the classroom
- completion of 4 practically-focused written assignments
- input sessions dealing with current methodology, language analysis and their application in the classroom
Please be aware that the full-time CELTA course is highly intensive. Candidates should not have any outside work or study commitments during the course.
The CELTA course programme is designed to enable candidates to:
- Develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the description of English and apply these in their professional practice
- Develop an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner
- Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English
- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and reference purposes
- Identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field
The course features are:
- Extensive teaching practice every day (or every Friday part-time) (six hours in total)
- Practical experience teaching students at different language levels
- Detailed feedback and discussion sessions with a course tutor
- Guided observation of qualified teachers (six hours in total)
- Seminars and demonstrations to improve language awareness
- Classroom management and lesson planning
Syllabus Overview
The syllabus consists of five units of learning that deal with specific topic areas in the teaching of ESOL.

Assessment & Grading
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. Rest assured, trainees are always kept informed of their progress during the course and an external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English, moderates each course.
There are two components of assessment:
1. Teaching practice
You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.
2. Written assignments
You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.
- Assess learner needs, and plan and teach lessons which take account of learner backgrounds, learning preferences and current needs
- Demonstrate language knowledge and awareness and appropriate teaching strategies
- Demonstrate knowledge about language skills and how they may be acquired
- Plan and prepare lessons designed to develop learners’ overall language competence
- Demonstrate an appropriate range of teaching skills at two levels and show professional awareness and responsibility
There are three grades — Pass, Pass ‘B’ and Pass ‘A’.
A Pass is awarded to candidates whose performance overall in the teaching practice and in the written assignments meets the specified criteria. They will continue to need guidance to help them to develop and broaden their range of skills as teachers in post.
A Pass (Grade B) is awarded to candidates whose performance in the written assignments meets the specified criteria and who have demonstrated in their teaching practice a level of achievement significantly higher than that required to meet pass-level criteria in relation to:
- classroom teaching skills
They will continue to need some guidance to help them to develop and broaden their range of skills as teachers in post.
A Pass (Grade A) is awarded to candidates whose performance in the written assignments meets the specified criteria and who have demonstrated in their teaching practice a level of ability and achievement and a level of awareness significantly higher than that required to meet pass-level criteria in relation to:
- planning for effective teaching
- classroom teaching skills
They will benefit from further guidance in post but will be able to work independently.
Candidates who fail to meet criteria in any or all assessed components will receive a Fail.
Candidates are ineligible for the award in cases where dishonesty or plagiarism is brought to the attention of the Cambridge English Teaching Awards.

We will happily provide access information once your application has been received and can arrange home stay accommodation upon request, subject/according to availability.
Because of the intensive nature of the course, we recommend that candidates find accommodation as close to the institute as possible.
If you wish to look for accommodation further away then you should ensure that it has good transport links. In addition, a quiet place to study and work in the evenings and weekends is essential and internet connection is invaluable.

CERTIFICATES LOST BY THE CANDIDATE
Any certificate lost by a candidate will not be replaced. In these circumstances candidates must apply for a Certifying Statement [see below].
Candidates can apply for a certifying statement themselves. This is only worth doing if needed for a job application etc.

THE DELTA MODULES
TEACHER TRAINING
If you already have at least two years full-time English teaching experience and want to take your teaching to another level,
why not deepen your knowledge and understanding by doing the Cambridge English Delta Modules?
The best-known and most popular advanced TEFL/TESOL qualifications in the world, the Delta Modules are a flexible way for experienced En- glish language teachers to progress further in their careers. Delta Mod- ules can be taken at any stage in a teacher’s career. They are suitable for people already teaching English in a variety of contexts, e.g. adult, primary or secondary teaching, and are intended for an international audience of non-first language or first-language teachers of English. The Delta Modules are internationally recognised qualifications de- signed for teachers who wish to build on their experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages. They aim to increase under- standing of the principles and practice of English language teaching and thereby help improve overall performance in the classroom, as well as preparing candidates for more senior teaching or educational manage- ment roles. The courses are validated and the syllabus and assessment criteria set by Cambridge English.
There are three Delta Modules which are separately assessed and certified:
- Module One focuses on the background to teaching and learning English in a range of contexts and is assessed through a written examination.
- Module Two focuses on planning and teaching lessons and selecting and using resources and materials and is assessed through a portfolio of coursework and an externally assessed classroom observation.
- Module Three focuses on designing courses to meet learners’ needs in specific contexts and is assessed through an extended written assign- ment.
Candidates are awarded a Diploma from Cambridge English for each module successfully achieved. Achievement of a Pass in all three mod- ules confers the status of a full Delta qualification.
For further information please contact us: delta@ih-buenosaires.com
The Combined Delta Modules Fully Online Part Time Extensive Course covers Module 2 of the Delta in its entirety, including all of the course work and the external assessment, as well as preparing candidates for the Module 1 exam (which can be taken at any centre in June and December of each year) and the Module 3 individual research project (which can also be entered for at any exam centre in June or December each year).
So by the end of the course, candidates will have completed Delta Module Two, be ready to take the Delta Module One exam and be ready to write their Delta Module Three extended assignment.
The course includes the following components:
Twenty four three-hour live online input sessions covering all of the methodology and knowledge needed to be successful in each Delta Module.
Module One
Guided exam technique and practice sessions for each part of the exam.
A full mock exam.
Module Two
An observed diagnostic lesson with full feedback on what areas need to be focused on to be able to pass Delta Module Two assessed lessons.

Individual online support tutorials for each assessed lesson.
An unassessed experimental practice lesson and reflective essay.
A continuous reflective assignment, discussing your progress throughout the course.
Module Three
Focused input sessions covering the methodology and practical design techniques needed for the extended assignment.

Delta Module Three Tutorial Support Packages
Delta Module Three is aimed at developing teachers’ awareness of the main types of syllabus and the methods for conducting needs analysis within different English language teaching specialisms. Candidates are introduced to research skills and the theory and techniques behind assignment planning and syllabus design. Candidates also look at assessment and its impact on syllabus content and teaching methodology. Delta Module Three is assessed via an extended written assignment.
International House Buenos Aires offers full preparation for writing your Delta Module Three assignment through our individual online tutorial support packages. Working through email and Skype or Facetime, course candidates and tutors meet online for each tutorial to discuss comprehensive written feedback provided for draft assignments and give advice about future planning of assignments at various stages of the writing process.
Tutorials are arranged according to the number needed and the times available to both tutors and candidates. Tutorials can be bought in packs from one to five tutorials, although five tutorials are recommended to ensure you keep on track throughout the assignment. The first tutorial takes place at the beginning of the writing process and focuses on the key issues behind your choice of specialism and helps you plan your needs analysis and diagnostic test. The second tutorial provides feedback on stage one of the writing process and helps you to plan stage two. The third tutorial provides feedback on stage two and helps you to plan stage three. The fourth tutorial looks back at stage three and ahead towards stage four. The final tutorial takes place once you have completed a first draft of the entire assignment, in order to provide you with comprehensive feedback and advice on what further work is necessary, ahead of submitting the assignment to Cambridge English by the deadline.
